How much is stamp duty in the UK?

Stamp duty (SDLT in England and Northern Ireland) is charged in bands based on the purchase price, with different rates for first-time buyers and additional properties. The rates and thresholds change, so always confirm the current government figures.

Do first-time buyers pay stamp duty?

First-time buyers usually pay reduced or no stamp duty up to a threshold. Above that threshold, standard rates apply. This calculator applies first-time buyer relief when you tick the box.

Is stamp duty different in Wales and Scotland?

Yes. Wales has Land Transaction Tax (LTT) and Scotland has Land and Buildings Transaction Tax (LBTT), both with their own rates. This calculator estimates SDLT for England and Northern Ireland.
